What camp do you work for? What type of camp is it?

Southwoods, Co-ed/Private/Residential

What is your title/position at camp?

Assistant Director

How long have you been working for camp, both seasonally and full-time?

10 Summers, 7 years full-time

How did you get your start in camping?  If you started off seasonally, how did you transition into your job as a full-time camp professional?

I got my start in camping at Southwoods as a Group Leader in the summer of 1998 while on summer break from Miami University. I worked for Southwoods for two summers as a Group Leader, then after graduation from college, I took on the role of the Boys Assistant Head Counselor. After teaching for a year in Austin, Texas, I returned to Southwoods as the Boys Head Counselor and took a full-time position the following fall as the Staff Coordinator.

What is your background in terms of major in school, degree(s) and school(s) attended, and if you had another career prior to camping, what was it?

I attended Miami University (of Ohio) and received a degree in Educational Psychology and Special Education. Prior to taking a full time position at Southwoods, I taught 4th, 5th and 6th grade children with Specific Learning Disabilities in a magnet school in Austin, Texas.

What areas do you primarily focus on in your role (staffing, camper recruiting, programming, etc.)? Any other skills that people can feel free to contact you about?

During the winter I follow up with prospective camp families, answering questions, registering them for camp, doing home visits and providing any other type of assistance that a new camp family might need. In addition to this role, I also over see the staff recruiting process. Throughout the summer I run the boy side of camp, working with the Assistant Head Counselors, Group Leaders and counselors to provide an amazing summer experience!

What do you like to do in your free time?

I like to stay active in my free time skiing (down hill and cross country), running with my dog Hank, hiking in the Adirondacks, supporting THE Ohio State Buckeyes, reading anything from Archie comic books to Bukowski, and practicing new songs to play at campfires.

Where do you live/work and how can people contact you?

During the winter, I live in Tarrytown, New York (Westchester) and the summers are picturesque Paradox Lake, New York (Adirondacks). I can be contacted at: adam@southwoods.com.
