What is your title/position at camp?

How long have you
been working for camp, both seasonally
and full-time?
I’ve been at CEL for 23 summers
(7 as a camper and 16 on staff); 7 years
full time with CEL.
How did you get your start in camping? If
you started off seasonally, how did you
transition into your job as a full-time
camp professional?
I was a camper at CEL and have worked
in the summers for 23 straight summers
(I tried to take one off but came up to
camp after two weeks at a dance program
when I was 12). I worked as a family therapist
during the year after I received my Masters
in Social Work and 7 years ago was offered
a full time position with camp.
What is your background in terms of major
in school, degree(s) and school(s) attended,
and if you had another career prior to
camping, what was it?
Emory University 1993-1997. BA. Double
major in Psychology and Education. New
York University 1997-1999. Master’s
in Social Work. I worked as a Family Therapist.
I have my LCSW. (state license)
What areas do you primarily focus on in
your role (staffing, camper recruiting,
programming, etc.)? Any other skills that
people can feel free to contact you about?
Camper Recruitment,
Staff Recruitment, Speaking with Parents, Staff Orientation and Training,
Quarterly News Letter, Alumni outreach,
Special Events, etc… After 7 years
full time and 23 summers at Echo Lake including
Group Leading, 4 years of Program Directing,
5 years as Girls Head Counselor and current
Main Village Director for boys and girls
ages 7-13, you can contact me about almost
anything to do with campers and / or staff
and / or parents. I also feel particularly
skilled with committees, conference and
event planning, and getting involved in
ACA!
What do you like to do in your free time?
Wait, we get free time?! Just kidding.
Besides checking my Blackberry…kidding
again! Ok, seriously, I love spending time
with my family and friends (many of who
are camp professionals and / or my former
camp friends) and my dog, Jake. I love
to be active, go out, go to concerts, and
be around people, although nothing beats
a good movie or chilling in front of the
TV (i.e. Lost, Grays Anatomy, Sex and the
City, etc…). I love to go up to
camp during the year and enjoy the Adirondacks
as well. I think happiness is a state of
mind and it’s a state I love.
Where do you live/work and how can people
contact you?
I live in New York City and can be contacted
anytime as I think it is important to be
connected in the industry and available
if needed. From mid May to early September
I can be found in the beautiful Adirondack
Mountains in Warrensburg, NY. I’d
love to hear from you… Laurie@campecholake.com.
