What camp do you work for? What type of
camp is it?
Matoaka, private, residential, all-girls
What is your title/position at camp?
Assistant
Director
How long have you been working
for camp, both seasonally and full-time?
I have been working for Camp Matoaka for
4 months but have been working in the industry
full time since 2002. Seasonally, my first
time on staff at camp was when I was 16.
How did you get your start in camping? If
you started off seasonally, how did you
transition into your job as a full-time
camp professional?
I started off seasonally as a camper-
fell in love with the life of a camper,
followed that through as a waitress and
on to working as a general counselor. I
grew up in the ranks in the camp I went
to as a camper and when I graduated from
college and it was time to find full time
work I did my best to stay within the industry. I
used any form of camp work as a connection
to the industry, working for the camp i
grew up at over winter breaks from college
and pre-camp and then used whatever outlet
I could think of to get involved. Joined
the American Camp Association, searched
for full time jobs in camping, took a position
with a camp referral service and then through
networking and a temporary position with
the ACA I found my way in- thanks to the
help and support of many great mentors
and friends.
What is your background in terms of major
in school, degree(s) and school(s) attended,
and if you had another career prior to
camping, what was it?
I graduated from Lehigh University with
a BA in social relations. I worked
with children throughout college as internships
and volunteer work, I did an independent
study on the positive developmental impact
of camp on children and have worked in
different camp environments in order to
learn as much as possible. (day,
residential, private, non-profit)
What areas do you primarily focus on
in your role (staffing, camper recruiting,
programming, etc.)?
