Adam K Baker
What camp do you work for? What type of
camp is it?
Camps Equinunk and Blue Ridge. Private
resident camp
What is your title/position at camp?
Director
How long have you been working for camp,
both seasonally and full-time?
4 years working as a year round director
- 1 resident, 3 day camp. 7 years
as a seasonal employee before that.
How did you get your start in camping? If
you started off seasonally, how did you
transition into your job as a full-time
camp professional?
I began as a sleep-a-way camper after
5 years of day camp and then spent the
next 14 years as a camper, counselor, group
leader, and director of health and safety. Having
spend my entire career at one camp, the
directors of the camp (my parents) felt
that it was imperative I work away from
our camps to gain a different experience
and ensure my aspirations of being a camp
director was not just because of my love
for Equinunk and Blue Ridge, but rather
for the profession.
What is your background in terms of major
in school, degree(s) and school(s) attended,
and if you had another career prior to
camping, what was it?
I completed a B.A. in Psychology at Tulane
University with a focus on child education
and then attended an Emergency Health Management
and Paramedic program at The George Washington
University.
What areas do you primarily focus on
in your role (staffing, camper recruiting,
programming, etc.)? Any other skills that
people can feel free to contact you about?
My responsibilities cover all aspects
of our camps including staffing, recruiting,
training, and support services; health
and safety, medical team, facility services
and construction, and food service. Campus,
Camper, and Staff health and safety and
emergency management and response are particular
areas of interest and I am always available
and happy to discuss.
What do you like to do in your free time?
I love my work with my local volunteer
ambulance association and regret my time
away during the summer. Spending
time outdoors, biking, tennis, swimming
are all great escapes and feel very fortunate
that throughout the summer I can continue
these activities during activities with
our campers and staff.
Where do you live/work and how can people
contact you?
I live on the East End of Long Island
and spend my summers in North East Pennsylvania. My
email is: adam@cecbr.com.
